As a mom with a special needs child, I don’t have the luxury of being able to work outside the home on a daily, committed basis. I say luxury because in my eyes, that’s what it is. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve gotten quite used to the work from home life and I like it – it suits our needs, but it wasn’t always that way.
For a while, I resented the kids for keeping me tied to the house, missing the escape and adult interaction that a stable job provided. I knew there were reasons behind my need to stay home: Tenley’s seizures made it difficult to have her cared for by others, even therapy centers trained in that sort of thing. Have a seizure, go home. Par for the course. And that was every day for awhile. Her behavioral issues compounded those moments. Add in the numerous visits to doctors and therapists that someone would have to take her too, it became clear that staying home and close, being on-call for her, and taking care of things on the home front was the right place to be.
Over the course of the last 10 years, I’ve worked from home in some form or fashion. I’ve met some amazing people that have guided me, counseled me, inspired me, and some that have taken a chance on me when I was just starting to get my feet wet. Working from home isn’t easy. It takes a unique kind of dedication. For me, my bed – I’m a habitual napper – was always calling. It takes time to build up to an income that means much of anything, and finding an opportunity that works for your situation can be difficult.
There are some great work from home related platforms, blogs, and job search boards out there – and yes, they are legit. I’ll be sharing my favorites in a future blog post, but today, I want to share one of my most recent endeavors, because it checks off a lot of my work from home boxes. I think it might for you as well!
It’s called SimplrFlex. It’s an online platform where you handle tickets that come into the queue. You’re essentially the customer service email rep for the companies that contract to use the platform. That’s right – no talking on the phone for those phone-shy or noise-in-the-background (aka kids) folks! They don’t take just anyone, as there is an application and testing process, but this is actually a good thing. They have great customer service themselves and have been pretty amazing to work with from the get-go. After getting your feet wet, it’s not unrealistic to make $300-$500 per week with great quality and dedication. An added bonus? You get paid via PayPal every week!
As someone whose home-life situation calls for the ability to drop everything, this kind of work has been extremely helpful. Finding odd jobs like this that I can do on the side, at all hours of the day or night, with the ability to set my own schedule (as in 5 minutes here, 20 minutes there) has been an amazing fit. And if the money you make with one of these types of jobs doesn’t bring enough dough in for your family, you can easily take on another. That’s the beauty of being your own boss and working from home!
